It's on the Cards: challenging ageism through intergenerational arts
Local primary school students join forces with older Tower Hamlets residents to design birthday cards
A powerful tool for social advocacy
Pupils from a Brick Lane primary school and older Tower Hamlets residents contemplated a pile of high street birthday cards – and despaired at the ageist humour on display. So with the help of our artists Sue and Skye, they set up a birthday card design studio to make new cards that celebrated the milestones of ageing. It’s on the Cards proves creativity can be a powerful tool for social advocacy and age-positive representation.
Finding a mass audience for our intergenerational work
We believe intergenerational stories deserve a world-class stage. From March to November 2026, the work produced during It’s on the Cards will be displayed at The Wellcome Collection in central London, as part of their flagship The Coming of Age exhibition. The Wellcome Collection received an average of half a million visitors a year – that’s a lot of people who will see our participants’ work and be inspired to think again about ageing!
Collaborating with world class museums
Our collaboration with The Wellcome Trust is the latest in a long line of prestigious partnerships between Magic Me and other cultural institutions. British Film Institute, City of London Sinfonia, Hackney Empire, London Museum (formerly Museum of London), National Portrait Gallery, Rich Mix, Spitalfields Festival, Tate Modern, Young V&A (formerly V&A Museum of Childhood), Wilton’s Music Hall and the Women’s Library are just some of the organisations we’ve joined with to co-create life-enhancing intergenerational projects.
