Artworks (2020 – 2023) is a paid Community Arts Trainee Programme supporting talented young people from BAME and working-class backgrounds living in Tower Hamlets to gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to access careers in the arts sector.

Funded by London Borough of Tower Hamlets, the programme provides employment opportunities for local TH residents, with an emphasis on learning through skills development workshops, mentoring, planning and delivering their own intergenerational community arts event with support from MM staff and artists. We have already successfully navigated working with one trainee throughout 2020, Nazifa Yazmin and you can read more about her experience here.

“I really discovered my passions and dislikes and I’m grateful for the doors it’s opened for me, it’s really given me that head start I needed for my journey in the arts.”
– Nazifa Yazmin, Artworks Trainee

Three new trainees, Hamida Begum, Jan Biedrzycki, and Shazna Begum, joined us this year and will work with Magic Me for five months. Through weekly workshops led by training programme facilitator Lewis Greener, trainees also gain knowledge of the theory behind participatory arts practice, build skills and confidence and work toward personal goals.

This summer, Hamida, Jan and Shazna are working on an 8-week project with long-standing Magic Me partner, Coopers Court Extra Care Scheme. Led by artists Sue Mayo and Mia Harris, the project will connect residents with local adults for creativity and conversation, culminating in a celebratory event.
