It’s Volunteers Week 2018 and we are showcasing some of our volunteer’s stories here on the website. Every single volunteer is important to us but we hope these stories will inspire you and if you are interested in volunteering with us check out our Volunteering section here
Andrea is one of our Cocktails In Care Homes Volunteers, here she talks about why she volunteers and what she gets out of it:
“I have a very busy professional career and volunteering in the care homes is one of the most satisfying things I do each month. I give a little bit of my time to brighten up the day of the residents in the home and those residents give me great pleasure. You get to hear stories from the different residents, what life was like when they were young people and some of the funny stories like when one resident found out that it was customary to give a goodnight kiss on the cheek at the end of a dance, he was very pleased about that and went to as many dances as he could. I leave my visits at the homes with a huge boost, it’s such a great experience.
I volunteer at Greenhive in Peckham where dancing is a real highlight: chair dancing or standing up dancing, everyone has fun. Westport is also a favourite home, the familiar faces are great and I enjoy catching up with the lives of the residents. Richard’s girlfriends, Mary’s grandchildren, it’s all lovely.”
